Applications are invited for L’Oreal Women in Science Fellowship Program available for U.S.-based women researchers for their outstanding contributions in science, technology, engineering and math fields. Scholarship Open for International Students: The fellowship is open to post-docs from the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (Applicants must be American citizens (born or naturalized) or permanent residents (green card holders). Unfortunately, visa holders are not eligible to apply).

Scholarship Description: The L’Oréal USA for Women in Science fellowship program annually recognizes and rewards five U.S.-based women researchers for their outstanding contributions in science, technology, engineering and math fields. Recipients receive up to $60,000 each for their postdoctoral research. Launched in 2003, the program is the U.S. component of the L’Oreal-UNESCO for Women in Science International Fellowships. The program’s U.S. partner, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), manages the peer-review and selection process. Candidates are evaluated using a two phase review process. In the first round, applications are evaluated by experienced scientists in the candidates’ respective fields. In the second round, a distinguished Jury of eminent scientists and former North American L’Oreal-UNESCO for Women in Science Laureates evaluate the top ranked candidates and select the five winners. The Jury seeks candidates with exceptional academic records and intellectual merit, clearly articulated research proposals with the potential for scientific advancement and outstanding letters of recommendation from advisers. New to the program since 2014, applicants are also evaluated on their commitment to supporting other women and girls in science.

Duration of award(s): The L’Oréal USA for Women in Science fellowship award is effective for one year. Any extensions must be requested in writing and must be approved by L’Oréal USA and AAAS.

What does it cover? Recipients receive up to $60,000 each for their postdoctoral research. The award is intended to support the applicant’s research project and provide career advancement. Fellowship funds should be used to support tuition fees, attendance at meetings and conferences, laboratory supplies, publications costs, computer and technical support, equipment and instruments. Indirect or fringe costs are not permitted including health insurance, rent, utilities, university overhead, etc.

Selection Criteria: Candidates are evaluated using a two phase review process. In the first round, applications are evaluated by experienced scientists in the candidates’ respective fields. How to Apply: A completed application requires three letters of recommendation. One letter should be from a mentor or former advisor. One letter must be from your post-doctoral advisor. Letters of recommendation can either be submitted electronically through the online application submission site or can be mailed directly from all references.

Scholarship Application Deadline: The 2015 L’Oréal USA for Women in Science application period will open on February 2, 2015 and will close on March 20, 2015.

Fellowship Description
L’Oréal Corporate Foundation (L'Oreal foundation) in partnership with UNESCO and the African Network of Scientific and Technological Institutions (ANSTI) announce the L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Sub-Saharan Africa Fellowships 2016.

The 7th edition of these fellowships support distinguished women scientists and engineers from sub-Saharan Africa. The fellowship is in recognition of the commitment and remarkable research of mid-career women in the fields of Life Sciences and Physical Sciences which are all still largely dominated by men.

The 2016 fellowships will be awarded to promote and encourage talented mid-career women scientists to pursue high-level PhD studies or post-doctoral research careers in science.


Eligibility
This fellowship is open to women citizens and permanent residents from Sub-Saharan African countries. The following criteria apply:
  • ​Having obtained a PhD degree in Life or Physical Sciences or pursuing studies leading to a PhD degree
  • Having the nationality of a Sub-Saharan African country
  • Working in a Research Laboratory or Institution in one of the region’s countries or being enrolled in a doctoral programme at a University in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Candidates must be no more than 40 years old by the end of the application period for PhD and not more than 45 years for post doctoral
Selection criteria :
The selection criteria of the candidate by the jury are the following:
  • The candidate’s outstanding academic records (including number, quality and impact of the publications (impact factors to be submitted), conference presentations, patents…)
  • The scientific quality of the research project
  • The innovative nature and productivity of the research and its potential application in science
  • The ability of the candidate to communicate and promote sciences to a younger audience and to encourage young African female scientists.

Fellowship benefits
Fellowships up to the maximum value of Euro 15,000 will be awarded.
  • 12 Fellowships of €5 000 each will be granted to African Ph.D. Students enrolled in an African University.
  • 2 Fellowships of €10 000 each will be granted to African postdoctoral researchers working in a laboratory or research institution registered in one of the countries of the region.
The fellowships will be paid to the beneficiaries in one installment after the fellowships official ceremony and signing the preliminary contract with L’OREAL Foundation. The awards of the fellowships to successful applicants will be awarded at a grand ceremony to be held in South Africa in October 2016.

In 2009 the “For Women in Science” program launched the L’Oréal-UNESCO Regional fellowships “For Women in Science” in Sub-Sahara Africa. one of its first regional programs, to assist women scientists in the Sub-Saharan Africa region to realize important scientific research in all fields of science, engineering and technology. This program celebrates the phenomenal achievements of the region’s women scientists and empowers them to further contribute to the world of science, engineering and technology.

The L’OREAL-UNESCO Fellowships take two forms: the REGIONAL FELLOWSHIPS of which the L’Oréal-UNESCO Regional fellowships “For Women in Science” in Sub-Sahara Africa is one; and the INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP (i.e. the UNESCO-L’Oréal International Fellowship programme), created in 2000 to encourage promising women worldwide who are working in the life sciences at the doctoral or postdoctoral level.
