Television was introduced in India on an experimental basis in Delhi on 15th September, 1959. This was made into a regular service in 1965. Thereafter, a number of T. V. centres namely, Mumbai, Srinagar, Jalandhar, Kolkata, Chennai and Lucknow were set up from October 1972 onwards in quick succession. The T.V. network received a big boost during the Ninth Asian Games in November 1982, when 20 low power transmitters were installed at different state capitals and important towns. Another landmark was achieved on 15th August, 1982 when colour television was introduced in the country. Doordarshan also started its National Programme.
Doordarshan network consists of 64 Doordarshan Kendras/Production Centres, 24 Regional News Units, 126 Doordarshan Maintenance Centres, 202 High Power tranmitters, 828 Low Powr Transmitters, 351 Low Power Transmitters, 18 Transposers, 30, Channesl and DTH Service and has a sanctioned strength of 21708 officers and staff of various categories.
Television is one of the greatest miracles of science. It was invented by J.L. Baird. One can now see live pictures on the screen while sitting in one’s own house. On the radio set, one can only hear the voice of the speaker but on television one can even see his own picture. This invention has brought about a revolution in the fields of entertainment, education and communication.

The greatest advantage of television is that one can watch its programmes at home. One need not go out for it. Television has great educative value for school and college students. It is a boon for a developing country like India. India is a vast country. It has an area of 32.87 lakh sq. km and a population of about 103 crore. Television programmes telecast under the National Network can reach out to the people living in the farthest and remotest parts of the country. Television gives us the latest national and international news.
We can see films and dramas on television. We can hear talks given by politicians, scientists, scholars, film stars, poets, writers, artists, musicians and other eminent persons. These talks play an important role in the mobilisation of public opinion. Television enlarges the frontiers of our knowledge.
Another advantage of television is that it helps to focus the attention of the people on social and political evils prevailing in society. Some of these evils are untouchability, dowry, drinking, gambling, drug addiction, etc. It can exhort the people to root out these evils.
Television also comes in handy to popularise Government policies and programmes like family welfare, tree plantation, adult education, etc. It is an effective medium for imparting civic sense among citizens.
Corruption is the enemy number one of our country. It is present in all walks of life. Television can play an important role in fighting the menace of corruption. People can be made aware of the evil effects of corruption on our economic and ethical life. They can be advised to help the Government in curbing bribery, black marketing, smuggling, hoarding, etc.
Television serves as a link between the Government and the people. It makes the people aware of the policies, programmes and activities of the Government. It also makes the Government aware of the problems being faced by the people.
Television has great entertainment value. We can see on it our favourite films. Sports lovers are able to watch sports events of national and international importance on their T. V. When cricket matches are relayed “live”, people remain glued to their T.V. sets for the whole day.
Nearly 70 per cent of our people live in villages. Agricultural programmes relayed on television interest the villagers very much. It enables them to boost their agricultural production. It tells them how they can supplement their income by taking to fishery, piggery and poultry in their spare time. In every News Bulletin, a weather forecast is given for the information and guidance of the farmers.
When the Parliament is in session, the highlights of the day’s proceedings in both of its Houses are telecast on the television so that the people remain in touch with the Parliament, where their elected representatives sit and deliberate on problems facing the country.
Television is also being put to good use by telecasting educational programmes for the benefit of school and college students. Special programmes are also telecast during the days of examination.
There is a saying, “there is nothing good or bad, only thinking makes it so”. Television, nay any other gift for mankind, cannot by itself be either good or bad. It merely places at man’s disposal more power and potential. But it is entirely upto man how he would put to use his power. Television has certain disadvantages also. Experience has shown that if a person spends too much time in watching T.V. daily, he will become lazy and shirk work. Doctors say that if a person, especially a child, sees television from a close range, it adversely affects his eyesight. Students sometimes fall into the bad habit of seeing films regularly on the T.V and V.C.R. and they neglect their studies, despite all these disadvantages, TV. Has become the most popular and effective medium of education and entertainment.

Television is one of the greatest inventions to ever be created, or is it? As a child I always thought television was great. Television was amusing and brought entertainment to the comfort of households. Although, over the years, I've learned that television does more harm than good to people's lives. Television teaches young children bad habits and family values are weakened by peoples' interest in television.
Many people grew up watching television ages ranging from one through twelve. Many of the bad habits children pick up come from television. Is there a program to educate children? Television programs for children are too explicit. Many programs promote violence and drugs, rather than programs that promote education. Children see it on television and think it's all right to do drugs and act out violence as long as you don't get caught. There are shows like Jerry Springer, where guests use violence and profanity to get their point across. Then there are late night shows where sexual content is used. Children at an early age shouldn't be learning about sex, they should be playing and having fun.
Next there are family values, in which television desecrates almost all of those factors. Before television, families used to sit at the dinner table and discuss daily agenda. Now at dinner time many families sit in front of the television with their food in their hand and don't say anything to one another. There were times when families went to the movies or amusement parks for entertainment. Now, they just sit in front of the television watching a variety of asinine programs and movies.
Before purchasing a new television set do a little research. Especially a well organized household. Television causes the world more harm than good. People reenact what they watch. If you have children monitor, what programs they are being exposed too. And if you love family time, know that television will interrupt at any place or any time of the day. All these years, I thought television was a great invention, but I noticed that people could do without and read a book to broaden the imagination.
Television is an important factor in most children's lives. There are some ways to affect the influence of television on children. Help your child to understand that cartoon characters, actors with make-up, and many T.V. scenes are artificial sets and that illusions are created by computers and the camera. Discuss ideas or questions of values which are raised by television programs. Watch television with your children.2. Asian American Race, Class, Gender, And Television Action: Vanishing Son And Martial Law
Although Asians and Asian Americans have been present on American television screens for decades, few television series have featured Asian or Asian Americans in starring roles. Kung Fu (Warner Bros, ABC, 1972-1975), starring David Carradine as Kwai-Chang Caine, featured a white American actor as a bi-racial Shaolin priest in the Old West. In the intervening twenty years, American action film and television, involving martial artists as heroes, tended to be dominated by narratives revolving around Euro-American protagonists played by actors as diverse as Tom Laughlin as Billy Jack, Ra.3. Violence in Media
As I grew up I started to watch more English movies as compared to cartoon and Indian movies because of so much details and realism as compared to Indian movies in which everything was perfect. They pointed out that although the actor has not actually been hurt or killed, such violence in real life results in pain or death. I have seen that American children watch an average of three to fours hours of television daily. In my opinion television can be a powerful influence in developing value systems and shaping behavior. Unfortunately, much of today's television programming is viol.4. Studio Writing for Television
Television (TV) has long been considered as one of the most important media for many people due to its notorious easy access (Selby & Cowdery, 1995, p. 1). A new English identity was not just promoted by religious independence but also by the reigning Tudory dynasty (1485-1603).6. How Television Affects Societies Views On Culture
African-Americans have a fairly good representation on many television shows, but you will be hard pressed to find many successful Asian actors/actresses. This is due to the fact that English is so widely spoken on these continents, whereas English has not become as popular in most Asian countries. In the second scenario, only men were involved. Others like the reality television shows like the new Joe Millionaire. For many reasons The Simpsons is the best television show out there. If The Simpsons consisted of live actors and actresses, many of the issues would be too personal to address, and much of the humor would be lost. It"s a little hard to do that with live actors and actresses. Sure you can tell a live actor to act drunk all the time, but a cartoon allows you to make the character exactly how you want.8. Entman

IntroductionCharlie Chaplin, the English comic actor, filmmaker and composer was one of the biggest stars of the silent film era. One of the first big scenes in the film sees him at a dinner party, which is being filmed and broadcast on television without his knowledge. This is a clear nod to the surveillance that he and others were subjected to in the heightened paranoia of the Cold War while also criticizing the invasion of famous people's private lives by media outlets such as television stations.11. One Man, Two Guvnors by Richard Bean
The English adaptation of the comedy entertained the audience by employing themes that fuel popular television soaps today. A Brechtian technique used often in the play is breaking the fourth wall, which is used so effectively and easily by the actors. Furthermore, music would be played in between scenes and were sometimes joined by the actors. This not only added versatility to the actors but also reinforced the fact that the play world really was just a play world and the actors were just actors on a stage. As 'One Man, Two Guvnors" was an English adaptation from the 1800s I.12. A Street Car Named Desire
