Description

What is more important, happiness or success?

Why not think of a win-win situation and have happiness and success both.

Why should you have to have only one of them?

I only wish that life would have been indeed so simple and we have got both. It required tremendous wisdom to balance the two because happiness and success sometime complement each other and sometime compete with each other.

Don’t get confused because our world is made like that.

Suppose someone you a question:

“Who is more important: man or woman?”

What should be your reply?

Can you say that man is more important than woman?

Can you say that woman is more important than man?

We know that man and woman are equally important because

  • One can’t exist without other
  • They come from the same womb
  • They need each other
  • They love each other
  • They complement each other

Yet sometime men are better and sometime woman are better, because they are different.

  • Men are better fighter but women are better healer.
  • Men have more physical power but women have more emotional power
  • Men have great passion but women have great compassion
  • Men are better in taking life, women are the source of giving life

You have to use the right person at the right time for the right purpose.

It is not easy to balance their merits and demerits and give them equal importance. The problem arises when we start giving importance to one over other. When this happens, the balance of nature is lost and the society gradually degenerate and filled with hatred, conflict and chaos.

The same can be said about happiness and success both.

You must give both of them equal importance because

  • They don’t exist without each other
  • They need each other
  • They complement each other
  • The source of happiness and success are same

Some people however trade one with other and they later lose both. They are like parents who seek only boys or only girls and we know the fate of such societies.

Some people seek success single-mindedly after sacrificing all their happiness. When they have no joy within, they can’t share happiness with others and soon lose all their friends and love. Then they start losing success because they lose the motivation to succeed and discarded by others for their selfishness.

Some people try to enjoy happiness at any cost and start enjoying whatever they have. They stop striving and they soon lose what they have just like a person who tries to live his life purely on his saving without earning loses all the saving soon. They start failing in life as they can’t succeed without effort and soon their life is filled with sorrow.

Hence the best is to have success as well as happiness in your life.

Don’t ignore one for the other.

You don’t have to.

I just experienced feeling someone having written what I wanted to write. It was not that bad, actually, because I discovered I wanted to write something different after all. Thanks Matt West.

While Matt West includes being a car manufacturer as a possible avenue to achieve the kind of deep satisfaction stemming from success, he also says that a life lived for the sole purpose of happiness is selfish. I realize that a successful car manufacturer is not wholly selfish, although his main goal is to maximize profit, because he contributes to the economy, employs people as well as sell people useful things. I want to make the point, however, that even if his objective were wholly selfish, it could still provide soul-enriching satisfaction from success that he would be fully justified to enjoy. It is often the accidental altruists. those whose purpose in life might be entirely separate from that of helping people that ends up being the most altruistic. Sometimes it takes a kind of reckless abandon and fierce determination and ambition that one most often find in purely self-driven people to generate the most happiness for all.

Rather than success being the metric according to which one ought to evaluate one's life, I advocate the use ofmeaning . Meaning is what ensues from overcoming adversity, prevailing against all odds, and what leaves you "strong at the broken places". I could not put it more eloquently than Theodore Roosevelt in his speech The Strenuous Life :

"I wish to preach, not the doctrine of ignoble ease, but the doctrine of the strenuous life, the life of toil and effort, of labor and strife; to preach that highest form of success which comes, not to the man who desires mere easy peace, but to the man who does not shrink from danger, from hardship, or from bitter toil, and who out of these wins the splendid ultimate triumph."
Roosevelt goes on to add that those who shirk from the strenuous life do not live meaningful lives. While Roosevelt believed that imperialism was an extension of the strenuous life, his point that the strenuous life can assist a nation to prosper is well-taken. However, his definition of "imperialism" seems different than the one currently in usage:

Above all, let us shrink from no strife, moral or physical, within or without the nation, provided we are certain that the strife is justified, for it is only through strife, through hard and dangerous endeavor, that we shall ultimately win the goal of true national greatness.
It can be dangerous proclaiming to be the sole arbiter of what warrants intervention in another country, even if the intervention springs from a shared moral responsibility, but the idea of being prepared to exert power when necessary in the service of all is quite appealing.

Charles Murray, one of the most influential public intellectuals in America, defines happiness in Pursuit of Happiness and Good Government as "lasting and justified satisfaction with one's life as a whole". This is not the kind of happiness that could be induced from drugs, although I do not think such happiness should be demonized or entirely abandoned (see Sam Harris' essay Drugs and the Meaning of Life ). Instead he says that "human beings enjoy the exercise of their realized capacities, with the enjoyment increasing the more the capacity is realized". This is a conception of happiness very much in line with the one centered on success, but it emphasizes the acquisition of meaning as the crucial component. This is consistent with a selfish purpose in life but as the very "duty of a human being functioning as a human being" is to pursue its own happiness, this is not only allowed and justified but expected. Furthermore, he adds that one's life better tap into one of four institutions to assure one's happiness: family, vocation (including avocation), community and faith. It is within these institutions that human beings find meaning in their lives.

Interestingly, for all his faults, Richard Nixon had an exceptionally clear idea of the purpose of life:

"…the unhappiest people in the world are those in the watering places, the international watering places like the south coast of France and Newport and Palm Springs and Palm Beach; going to parties every night, playing golf every afternoon, then bridge. Drinking too much, talking too much, thinking too little. Retired. No purpose.

And so, well I know those who will totally disagree with this and say ‘Gee, boy, if I could just be a millionaire that would be the most wonderful thing; if I could just not have to work everyday, if I could just be out fishing or hunting, or playing golf, or travelling, that would be the most wonderful life in the world’ …they don’t know life, because what makes life mean something is purpose. A goal. The battle. The struggle. Even if you don’t win it…"

Lastly, I would like to mention a different point of view. According to the normative theory of utilitarianism "the best moral action is the one that maximizes utility", which in this context is usually defined as the total well-being of sentient life. That is to say, one ought not only to take others well-being into consideration in one's pursuit of happiness but actively seek to increase it and make it a central priority in life. This is admirable, but runs deeply counter to the instincts built in by eons of selection pressure. These can be overrided to some degree, but it is definitely an uphill battle. That shouldn't dissuade us, as the The Strenuous Life teaches. The question is rather which method is most effective in achieving this. My own view is that some best achieve it by trying to help others as much as possible, whereas others tilt toward being accidental altruists and should refrain from suppressing that.

Some claim with justification that there is no symmetry between pain and pleasure and one therefore ougth to prioritize minimizing avoidable suffering more than maximizing happiness. Suffering should be reduced to the utmost of our capability, but I think pain is necessary in creating the texture of life and to the adversity from which meaning to your life is extracted. As Jim Morrison puts it, "you feel your strength in the experience of pain".

I will give the last word to Richard Nixon:

"Only if you have been in the deepest valley, can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain."

A PHILOSOPHY WITH A NEW TWIST
A philosophy professor stood before his class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2" in diameter.
He then asked the students if the jar was full? They agreed that it was.
So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.
The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full.
They agreed it was. The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.
Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous -- yes.
The professor then produced two cans of beer from under the table and proceeded to pour the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand.
The students laughed. "Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided,
"I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things -- your family, your partner, your health, your children -- things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.
"The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else -- the small stuff.
"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued "there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.
"Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children’s take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal.
"Take care of the rocks first -- the things that.
