Edexcel AS History Essay Structuring

Edexcel AS History Essay Structuring/planning/writing. Help.

(Original post by theartyard )
Yeah I would like some help on that too if anyone has any good tips and advice. I have a history essay question/test tomorrow. *sighs*

History essays can be a bit of hit and miss really. I thought I had really messed up after my exams, so I nearly fainted on results day to see that I had got 300/300 for AS History.

With regards to advice, this is what I said on another thread:

"Examiners want to see a 'sustained evaluative argument.' This means making your argument clear from the introduction. One way to do this is the 'ADQ' model: for each paragraph, start by directly answering the topic, in the main bulk of the paragraph, give data and evidence to support your points, and in the last sentence, relate the arguments directly back to the question. This should help you to focus on analysis and evaluation, whilst hopefully avoiding narrative answers.

Also, despite the fact that AS History essays to not have to be the most stylistically sophisticated ones, it can't hurt to show off extra knowledge by dropping in a quote or talking about the historiography of interpretations.

My only other bit of advice is, write fast from the start, because you'll almost certainly be writing until the last minute. Choose a pen where the ink flows smoothly on the page."

What do you exactly mean by answering the question directly? And surely if it was for every paragraph, would it not get annoying too read and score.

eg) if the question was like. To what extent was King a inspirational leader?

How would you do it by each paragraph?

eg) if the question was like. To what extent was King a inspirational leader?

How would you do it by each paragraph?

By answering the question, I mean relating back to the essay title, not just giving a narrative. Of course, you would have to paraphrase the question each time, since I agree, it would be a very boring essay otherwise.

So for your example, you could have:

. The effectiveness of widespread public demonstrations - most significantly, the Montgomery Bus Boycott - is itself testament to the successes of Martin Luther King Jr. as an influential leader.

His status as the charismatic figurehead of the civil rights movement was further enhanced by.

Besides this, his inspirational qualities were further manifested by.

Despite these successes in orchestrating popular support, the extent to which King's rhetoric served to influence national sentiment has been reasessed by revisionist historians such as [enter names of historians]; in particular, with regards to the relative successes of his campaigns both north and south of the Mason-Dixie line.

Good Learning - How to write a Good GCSE English Essay - which Structure and Process should you use for Maximum Grades?

What makes a good English essay? Besides the quality of what you say to show your understanding of the topic, which is very important, the other main influencing factor on your GCSE grade is essay structure.

Obviously there are various types of GCSE English exam questions, such as responses to English Literature novels or poetry, or written analyses of non-fiction texts, such as media texts like magazine articles and advertising leaflets. And yes, one could argue that there are as many different essay structures as there are exam essay questions and topics.

But in order to simplify the process of how to write a good English essay. we are going to break down the structure of an essay into its key component parts. to enable you to use this knowledge to put together good essays, no matter what the topic.

So what’s first with essay writing?

Analyse the question. Read it, then read it again. Make sure you are clear what’s being asked. If necessary, underline key words that either ask you to do something (eg. explain, evaluate), or words or phrases that refer to the topic of this question.

Often, but not always, questions give you clues as to how to structure your essay. For example, after the main question on whether an article is effective or not, the question might also ask “Discuss the effectiveness in terms of the layout, language and presentation of the article”.

If the question gives you these additional clues, imagine each item mentioned as a separate paragraph or series of paragraphs in the main body of your essay.

Is planning necessary?

If you hate planning for your writing, then you’re not doing it right! A plan should be a quick scribbled draft of keywords and ideas for the structure and main points of your final essay. It should not contain full sentences, and nor should it take longer than 5 or 10 minutes to do. A plan should help you write a better essay, and be referred to constantly as you write, to remind you of what to write, and where to write it. A plan is for you, not for your teacher!

Do a plan in the way most useful and sensible to you – some people draw circles for each planned paragraph with keywords inside each, which act as prompts when you write the final essay. Other people jot down points more or less in chronological order on the planning sheet, to remind them of the sequence of points/paragraphs to follow in the final essay.

Your plan should contain the following broad sections: an introduction paragraph section, separate spaces for each key paragraph/topic/idea, and a conclusion paragraph section.

What then?

Go back to your question. and write down the main points you need to make in the final essay, one per paragraph space on your plan. Then use the PEEL approach to jot down some key ideas/quotes per paragraph point. PEEL stands for: Point (make your point), Evidence (give some evidence, usually a quote, to support it), Explain (explain your point in more detail), and Link (link your point back to the question asked).

Think about your introduction and conclusion paragraphs. Write down some keywords or phrases of things you might use when it comes to actually writing the complete essay.

Now start writing!

Refer to your plan throughout this process. Your plan will help keep you focussed on the question topic and the points you need to make. Remember that you have a relatively short time to write a complete essay in, and the plan will help you keep to the timing, and to finish your essay.

If you can’t think of a creative and engaging way to start your essay (for example, ask a rhetorical question related to the topic or literature), then simply state what you are going to do in this essay. However make sure that you use appropriate language in your introduction, which shows you have a good understanding of what it’s all about. For example “In this essay I’m going to explore and analyse key concepts of the poem ‘Digging’ by Seamus Heaney in terms of the metaphors, meaning and themes” is better than “I’m going to show my understanding of ‘Digging’ by Seamus Heaney”. Then move on – after all, the introduction is unlikely to give you many extra marks.

Each of the paragraphs in the main body of your essay should then address a separate topic/theme/issue that you feel is relevant to the question, and needs to be discussed. As stated above, use the PEEL approach for each point. You do not have to keep mentioning how it ties to the question, but it’s a good idea to keep the question asked in your mind as you go, so that you don’t veer off-topic, ‘waffle’ and waste your time.

Finally you must have a conclusion paragraph. As for the introduction, if you cannot think of anything innovative, personal or evaluative to say at this point, then simply tie up and summarise what you have written in the essay. If you do this, try to use different words than you did in your introduction. However a well thought-out conclusion, offering some insight or personal thoughts, and linked to the topic/poem/article and question, will gain more marks than simply stating what you have done.

How do you make your essay stand out?

A good essay not only answers the question with relevant points and evidence, but is also written with the reader in mind. One way to do this is to imagine you’re writing for a wider audience, say as a journalist for a teenage magazine, than just for your teacher or examiner. Introduce and conclude your essay in interesting ways that capture the reader’s attention.

Use literary features like rhetorical questions, anecdotes, different sentence and paragraph lengths, and humour, as appropriate, to add appeal. Try to avoid repeating words – instead think of other words with similar meanings to convey your point. Use various connectives, adjectives and adverbs in your writing. Only copy or quote parts of the article/text/poem where relevant for evidence. otherwise rewrite the point you’re making about the text in your own words. This will show that you have better grasp of the text too.

Finally – proof-read your essay!

If you have time after writing – and you should plan to have a few minutes at the end of the exam – you need to read through your entire essay and correct any obvious mistakes or issues that will bring your marks down. Proof-reading requires concentration, because if you don’t, your brain will simply read what you meant to write, rather than what is on the page in front of you!

You need to check for errors with spelling, repetition, punctuation, and sentence structure. But proof-reading is also about reading the entire essay from the reader’s point of view, to test if the whole piece of writing flows and make sense. You also need to check that you have answered the exam question.

Fix what you can in the time left, and then you’re done. Good luck!

Essay Structure

Essay Structure

Posted on Sep 08, 2014

The ability to produce a high quality essay is one of the most sought-after skills amongst students of all levels, and this short article aims to provide hints and tips for those trying to achieve this.

Each essay should have a thesis – main argument – which will be used to answer the question posed and link all of the material presented together. This is the key element that is usually missing. The ability to boil down an argument into a single sentence takes practice, but reaps rewards. The thesis does not need to be very complex, nor does it need to be elegantly crafted at first, what it will do is provide a focus for you to remember exactly what it is that you are trying to convey in your essay.

Essay structure is neglected by teaching, leading to many students adopting a write-down-all-I-know-about-the-topic approach, producing essays without any sustained analysis. However, a well structured essay which presents less content in a meaningful and persuasive way will be marked more highly than an unstructured essay. The ability to write less for increased marks is especially useful during timed exams, making them a slightly less unpleasant experience. Each essay should possess effective paragraphing, punctuation and use of grammar as well as a basic framework such as an introduction, main body and conclusion. In an introduction, briefly outline the problem raised by the question and then be explicit about what the essay is going to contain, including the thesis. The first and last sentences of each paragraph in the main body of the essay can be used to provide shape and flow, and each paragraph should contain only one point, using the PEEL system. Firstly, the point is introduced, followed an explanation. for example, the effect the point has or how important it is. Some evidence to support the point should also be presented, which could be in the form of a quote or examples. Finally, the point should be linked to the question and thesis.

Another method which is essential to producing a well structured and coherent essay is planning. An essay plan will gather all of the arguments in one place, allowing the identification of the thesis, and an assessment of whether all of the material can be dealt with in the time available. Excess material can either be cut completely, or joined together into groups which will be covered together to make one argument in less detail. The points to make in the essay can also be arranged in a sensible and coherent order, to maximize the persuasiveness of the essay. It is a mistake to think that planning is a waste of time in a timed examination – a well-planned essay is a well-structured one, leading to higher marks. A rule of thumb is to plan for five minutes for an essay writing time of one hour, ten minutes for a writing time of one and a half hours and so on.

The use of clear language is also hugely important – the main aim in writing an essay could be described as limiting the stress of the examiner. An examiner should have a very clear idea of what each paragraph is saying as a happy marker is more generous. Using connectives such as therefore, however, and to conclude, ensure that the essay is coherent and easy to read. Including a range of vocabulary will help to keep the attention of the reader and ensure their interest in the material presented. For science essays, the use of diagrams and/or flow charts is extremely beneficial. Diagrams break up the body of the text, improving reader interest, and convey material more clearly and quickly than writing it out long hand – which you no longer need to do.

One common issue that arises during essay writing is focusing too much on creating the perfect paragraph the first time. Do not stare at an empty screen waiting for your inner perfectionist to be happy – allow yourself to write a poor paragraph for editing later, as it is far easier to edit text than to create it. Also, to increase productivity and effectiveness, maximize your concentration levels by working over short time periods, with rewards in between.

If these basic rules are followed, the essay produced will have a clear direction and make easy reading – improving marks awarded.
