Description

Scholarships from Wal-Mart Emphasize Community

Walmart Scholarships Community-Focused Corporate Giving

Walmart began as a single store in 1962, and after fifty years owned a total of 10,626 retail outlets, including Walmart locations in the U. S. and abroad and a subsidiary called Sam’s Clubs. It is the world’s largest retailer, keeping both its prices and its wages low and providing inexpensive imported goods. In terms of growth and profitability, the business model has succeeded in spectacular fashion.

Corporate Responsibility

Walmart’s philanthropic arm is called the Walmart Foundation, and Walmart employees also contribute volunteer service to their communities. Walmart’s corporate gifts include grants to local agencies like chapters of the YWCA and the USO, nonprofits that house the homeless and feed the hungry, and communities trying to rebuild after disasters. In addition to the scholarships described below, which are given to Walmart’s employees and their dependents, Walmart donates money to minority scholarship providers like the American Indian College Fund and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

Walmart Scholarships

Both types of scholarship currently offered by Walmart require that you be a citizen or permanent legal resident of the U. S. in order to apply. You must be able to document financial need, and if you already have a way to pay your school expenses you are not also eligible for a scholarship from Walmart.

Walmart Associate Scholarship

The Walmart Associate Scholarship specifies that your employment with Walmart must extend at least six consecutive months before the date the application is due. You must be a graduate of high school or home school, or about to graduate, and a GED is also acceptable. Those about to graduate from high school must apply no earlier than six months before starting college.

There are three relevant sets of documents you should read, including guidelines for the program, frequently asked questions, and a checklist and cover sheet to print out. You must create an online account to apply, and meet certain criteria before entering your application (this portion of the process is called the online quiz). Pay special attention to what you will be asked in this step, because you will not be able to apply if you don’t provide satisfactory answers.

As of 2013, the most you can collect from the associate scholarship is a total of $16,000 over six years, although if you complete your degree before that total is reached your ability to renew the award will end. Walmart has set up a renewal system on the web, so you can renew online when your school wants you to do so. There are four renewal windows each year.

There are three different levels of funding distributed according to the type of school you attend:

  • American Public University (APU): award ranges from $500 for between three and six credit hours to $1,000 for 12 credit hours.
  • Two-year program (community college or other certificate-granting school): award terms are the same as for an APU.
  • Four-year program or graduate school: award varies between $750 for between three and six credit hours to $1,500 for 12 credit hours.

There are also annual funding limits, based on Walmart’s fiscal year: $1,500 for a certificate program, $2,000 for an associate or graduate degree, and $3,000 for a bachelors degree. Renewal requirements include a transcript of your most recent grades showing a GPA of 2.0, plus proof of both successful completion of at least three credit hours and registration for another period in school. Walmart requires you to request at least two awards per year, in order to demonstrate your ongoing commitment to earning your academic credentials.

Walmart Dependent Scholarship

The Walmart Dependent Scholarship is reserved for legal dependents of Walmart employees whose employment spans at least six consecutive months as of the annual spring deadline. Dependents of corporate management (vice president and above, board members) are not eligible. The high school equivalency requirements are the same as for the associate scholarship, but to be eligible for a scholarship in the current year, your graduation must occur within the stated annual timeframe (for example, August 1, 2012-July 31, 2013).

The online documentation provided for the dependent scholarship is very similar to that discussed above, with a few points of difference. You must have a GPA of 2.0 on a four-point scale and enroll in the fall at a two- or four-year school as a full-time freshman. Your school must be not only accredited but found on this list from the U. S. Department of Education. A military academy is not an approved institution, and if you enter a two-year school, you must transfer to a four-year school by the third year (which you would have to do in any event to earn a four-year degree).

The cumulative funding limit is $13,000 in four consecutive years of full-time attendance. To receive your award money (usually $1,625 per disbursement), you must fill out a Scholarship Acceptance Agreement, and that will be required for each payment. Payments are made once in each school term. Eligible expenses include tuition, room and board, textbooks, and fees.

Wal-Mart: Staying on Top of the Fortune 500

Last year, Wal-Mart had revenues of $191 billion. Wal-Mart's 2002 sales topped $218 billion, with sales growth at 13.8 %. Its 2002 net income was $ 6.7 billion, a growth of 6 %. Wal-Mart has 1,283,000 employees, as of 2002; a growth of 11.2 % (www.fortune.com).

Wal-Mart is the largest retail store in the United States, and is larger than any other retail chain in the world. Currently Wal-Mart operates over 4,150 retail facilities globally. Also, the company is the dominant retail store in Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom (www.walmart.com). According to the Fortune 500 index of the wealthiest and most powerful corporations in the world, Wal-Mart holds the number one spot, ranked by its total sales. The company is ranked as the second most admired company in the world by Fortune (www.fortune.com)

Wal-Mart provides general merchandise: family apparel, health & beauty aids, household needs, electronics, toys, fabrics, crafts, lawn & garden, jewelry and shoes. Also, the company runs a pharmacy department, Tire & Lube Express, and Photo processing center as well. (www.walmart.com)

When Sam Walton created Wal-Mart in 1962, he declared that three policy goals would define his business: respect for the individual, service to customers, and striving for excellence ( www.wal-mart.com).

Wal-Mart's corporate management strategy involves selling high quality and brand name products at the lowest price (Vance, 119). In order to keep low prices, the company reduces costs by the use of advanced electronic technology and warehousing. It also negotiates deals for merchandise directly from manufacturers, eliminating the middleman (Vance, 72).

Wal-Mart's community outreach focuses on the goals of providing customer satisfaction, involving itself with local community services, and providing scholarships. Its emphasis is on children and environmental issues (www.walmart.com).

After the Second World War, the style of retailing in the US evolved into discount merchandising. It took the form of departmentalized retail business. A discount retail store such as Wal-Mart can provide lower priced goods for consumers at lower prices by accepting lower margins, while selling greater quantities of goods. The company launched its business in small-towns throughout the South and Midwest, eventually expanding into larger cities (Vance, 69).

During the 1970s, the retail industry became highly competitive, but, at the same time the economy became weak due to inflation. Sears was the leading retailer in the nation, during the 1970s, however, the recession of 1974-1975 and inflation affected Sears adversely. Sears targeted middle class families and expanded its overhead. Wal-Mart's strategy was to compete with its rivals and lower overhead expenses. Compared with Sears, which consisted of more than 6,000 distribution centers, Wal-Mart had only 2,500 comparable units.

Wal-Mart grew rapidly during the 1980s due to diversification of the company. Wal-Mart's fundamental business principles at that time were to provide "high-quality," brand name merchandise at low-prices and to locate stores in small towns (Vance, 113).

Wal-Mart centered on small-towns first, then tried to move to large cities. This happened while other retailers centered on larger urban centers. However, as the economy faced a downturn, people wanted low price stores. Furthermore, as people became mobile, they moved to small towns and suburbs and were willing to travel further to buy low price products.

During the 1980's, local chambers of commerce supported Wal-Mart because they believed that the company helps a local economy by providing good quality products at low prices (Vance, 148). Unfortunately, critics contend that the success of Wal-Mart hurts the existing local independent merchants. Despite the criticism that Wal-Mart destroys small-town competitors, the local chambers of commerce endorsed Wal-Mart (Vance, 72). In addition, the chambers of commerce account that the arrival of Wal-Mart provided jobs for people and a more diverse opportunity for local merchants by adapting to the new business environment. They said that Wal-Mart contributes to their local economy (Vance, 149).

Nonetheless, local newspapers began to scorn Wal-Mart because the company did not nurture amiable relationships with local advertisers. Once local competition was eliminated, Wal-Mart began to cut back and eliminate local advertising in favor of direct mailing of a centrally produced circular Vance, 72).

Today, Wal-Mart has 1,636 retail stores. There are 1,093 Wal-Mart Super centers, 502 Sam's Clubs, 31 Wal-Mart Neighborhood stores and 1,183 international stores ( www.walmart.com). Its core retail business can be divided into four retail divisions: Wal-Mart stores, super centers, Sam's Club warehouses and neighborhood markets. Wal-Mart stores and Super centers provide "one-stop family shopping"; combining groceries and general merchandise departments. Sam's Club is the nation's leading members-only warehouse club. Neighborhood Markets offer a convenient shopping experience for customers who need groceries, pharmaceuticals and general merchandise.

Internationally, Wal-Mart has more than 1,000 stores in nine countries. (www.walmartstore.com. Retail Division)

Sam's Club provides more discounted prices for members by eliminating the middlemen by buying directly. Founder Sam Walton believed that low-prices and deep discounting would appeal to customers most and beat competitors. (Vance, 115) Further, Sam Walton intended to implement deep discounting which was designed to provide 40- 60 % discounted prices for customers. Thus, he focused on supermarket and super drug store businesses (Vance, 113).

When Wal-Mart first arrived on the scene with their low prices, K-Mart stores was unable to discount brand-name products. Customers wanted to buy good quality brand-name products. K-Mart provides non-name brand goods cheaply, however, it could not maintain constant low prices with its name-brand

How to Win a Walmart Scholarship: Strategy Guide

SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips

Walmart offers a couple of scholarship opportunities for its employees and employees' dependents. These scholarships are meant to cover college or vocational school expenses for those who have financial need.

I'll talk about eligibility requirements and the application process first; if you're already familiar with this information, you can skip to the second half of the post. This is where I'll give tips and strategies for increasing your chances of winning a Walmart scholarship.

What Are the Walmart Scholarships?

Walmart has two scholarship options; both are geared to assist Walmart employees and their families who might not otherwise be able to afford a college education. If you win either scholarship, you can renew the award throughout the length of your degree program without having to re-apply. If you happen to be eligible for both scholarships (for example, if you and your parent both work at Walmart), you'll unfortunately only be able to win one.

Associate Walmart Scholarship

The Associate Scholarship is available to Walmart employees who have worked full-time or part-time with the company for at least 6 months before the application deadline.

The scholarship can be renewed for up to 6 years, or until the end of the funded degree program (whichever comes first), with a maximum funding limit of $16,000 per degree program.

Your level of funding depends on (1) your enrollment status, and (2) the type of school you're attending. Here's an outline of the funding levels per award period:

Dependent Walmart Scholarship

The Dependent Scholarship is available to dependents of Walmart employees who have worked full-time or part-time with the company for at least 6 months before the application deadline. In other words, if you're a child or dependent of a Walmart employee, you're eligible for the Walmart scholarship even if you haven't worked there yourself.

The scholarship is renewable, and can be used for up to 4 years of continuous, full-time enrollment, with a maximum funding limit of $13,000 per degree program. Awards are disbursed, or given out, $1,625 at a time.

How Do You Know If You're Eligible?

Unfortunately, neither the Associate nor the Dependent Scholarship is open to the public. In order to be eligible, you have to be a Walmart employee or the dependent of a Walmart employee.

The Associate and Dependent scholarships have slightly different eligibility requirements, which I've outlined below.

Associate Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

In order to be considered for the Associate Scholarship, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Must be either a US citizen or permanent legal resident of the US
  • Must be employed with Walmart at least 6 consecutive months before the application deadline
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED, or be a graduating high school senior who is planning to enroll in college after graduation
  • If you're applying for the scholarship as a high school senior, you must wait to apply until you're within 6 months of starting college classes
  • Must be able to demonstrate financial need (I'll discuss how you do this in the section on applying for the scholarship)
Dependent Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

In order to be considered for the Dependent Scholarship, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Must be either a US citizen or a permanent legal resident of the US
  • Must be the dependent of a Walmart employee who's actively worked with the company for at least 6 consecutive months before the appropriate application deadline. Dependents of Board of Directors or officers are not eligible to apply.
  • Must be a high school or home school graduating senior, or earning a GED
  • Must be able to demonstrate financial need (I'll discuss how you do this in the section on applying for the scholarship)
  • Must have a high school GPA of at least 2.0
  • To renew your funds, you must be enrolled full-time, with a minimum 2.0 GPA, and attending a 4-year college by your 3rd year

You don't need a perfect report card to apply for this scholarship (not that it would hurt!)

What Information Do I Need to Apply?

You'll need to gather some materials and information, especially around your family's financial situation, in order to complete your scholarship applications. I'll list everything you need to have before you start for each scholarship.

Associate Scholarship Materials

To apply for the Associate Scholarship, you'll need:

  • If a family member has claimed you as a dependent, you'll need an electronic copy of your most recent family income tax return. If you claimed yourself, you'll need a copy of your most recent tax return.
  • Your family adjusted gross income
  • Your Expected Family Contribution, or EFC. You can estimate your EFC using the FAFSA4caster ; get clear instructions on using the FAFSA4caster here. To get an official EFC, you'll have to submit a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Use this guide to get step-by-step instructions on submitting a FAFSA.
  • A comprehensive list of volunteer or service activities you've participated in within the last 4 years
  • Name and contact information for your high school
  • Name of the college or vocational school you're planning on attending
  • Your Walmart facility # - ask your manager if you don't have this information
Dependent Scholarship Materials

To apply for the Dependent Scholarship, you'll need:

  • Current US federal income tax return from the individual who's claimed you as a dependent
  • Current federal Student Aid Report (SAR). A SAR is generated when you submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. If you submit your FAFSA online, it'll take about 3 days to receive your SAR. Get step-by-step instructions on submitting a FAFSA here .
  • High school transcript showing your grades and GPA through your first semester of senior year. This does not need to be an official transcript.
How Do You Submit an Application?

You can submit an application for both the Associate and Dependent scholarships online here. Register online and take the appropriate Scholarship Eligibility Quiz to gain access to the application. If you fail to meet eligibility requirements, you won't be able to submit an application. When your application is submitted, you'll receive an email verification.

The Associate Scholarship application has several application windows throughout the year. Here are the upcoming application periods:

Application Launch Date

Application Due Date

The Dependent Scholarship application window for 2016 has already closed (January 5, 2016 - April 1, 2016). The application window for 2017 will likely be January-April of 2017.

When Do You Find Out Whether You've Been Selected?

Notification for Associate Scholarship depends on the application deadline (see chart above). Typically, applicants are notified 6 weeks after the deadline.

Dependent Scholarship applicants were notified in May for this past application cycle; the notification date for the next cycle will likely be in May 2017.

How Can You Use Walmart Scholarship Money?

If you're offered either scholarship, you'll need to submit a Scholarship Acceptance Agreement online before any funds are disbursed. Scholarship checks will then be mailed directly to your school. The scholarship money can be applied to charges for tuition, fees, books, and on-campus room and board.

Associate and Dependent Scholarship funds must be used at an accredited school (check out a full list of schools here). Unfortunately, you can't use Walmart scholarship funds at a military academy.

Strategies: How to Increase Your Chances of Winning a Walmart Scholarship

Use these strategies to submit your very best scholarship application!

There's a lot of overlap between the Associate and Dependent Scholarships, so first I'll give advice that applies to both programs. Where there are differences between the scholarships, I'll give specialized advice.

All scholarship applications are evaluated by an independent, impartial selection committee. Everyone with a complete application who meets all eligibility requirements will be considered. Financial need is considered as a primary criterion for both scholarships ; there's not much you can do to change your family's financial situation, but you'll have a chance to explain financial hardships or difficulties in the application.

General tips and strategies :

  • Make sure you meet all eligibility requirements before beginning the application process. If you don't meet the requirements and answer the Eligibility Quiz honestly, you won't even have access to the application.
  • The applications ask about your employment history with Walmart. If you or the person who's claimed you as a dependent is in good standing, you'll likely have better chances of receiving the scholarship.
  • The applications ask about your parents' levels of education. First-generation college students may be more likely to receive the scholarship.
  • The applications give you the opportunity to discuss "special circumstances." This is a chance to set yourself apart from other eligible applicants.
    • Touch briefly on any financial hardships without sounding too self-defeating. Be matter-of-fact, and explain how a Walmart scholarship could help you achieve your academic and professional goals in light of your financial limitations .
    • One Walmart scholarship winner noted that he was grateful for the assistance in funding his education because it will improve his family's future. Will winning this scholarship affect anyone besides you in a positive way. If so, discuss that in your application.
    • Discuss any extraordinary hardships or events that have challenged you. An evaluation committee will be impressed with any individual who has overcome significant obstacles to further pursue their educational and career goals.
Associate Scholarship Applications

This scholarship is very competitive - only about 10% of eligible applicants receive the award. As such, it's important to dedicate significant time and energy to your application. In addition to financial need, an important criterion considered by the evaluation committee is the applicant's level of community involvement.

Tips and strategies:

  • The application gives you the option of discussing up to three volunteer experiences that you’ve participated in within the last 4 years. Examples given include hospital volunteering, drug/teen/homework helplines, and outreach programs. Based on these examples, it seems that this program is looking for applicants who have worked with disadvantaged or marginalized populations.
  • Talk about your passion for helping others. Do not repeat information about your volunteer activities, but discuss your future educational plans and how they will help you to help others.
  • Emphasize any similar volunteer activities that you've participated in. If you're currently looking for volunteer opportunities and may apply for this scholarship in the future, seek out a volunteer position where you can demonstrate community involvement. For example, volunteer at a nursing home, refugee center, or low-income school.

As you can tell, Walmart likely wants to maximize its impact on the community, which means if it funds students who have also contributed to the community, Walmart's impact is magnified. Your goal is to show Walmart that you'll be able to use its help and improve the community as a Walmart representative.

Dependent Scholarship Applications

This scholarship is fairly competitive, with only about 25% of eligible applicants receiving the award. In addition to financial need, an important criterion considered by the evaluation committee is your past academic performance.

Tips and strategies:

  • If you're a younger high school student, one of the best things you can do to increase your changes of winning the scholarship is keeping your grades up. A 2.0 GPA is the minimum to apply, but the selection committee will undoubtedly be more impressed with a high-achieving student .
  • Talk about your academic passions and interests. Explain how this scholarship will assist you in achieving concrete career or educational goals based on your academic interests.
  • If you meet the minimum GPA requirement but have rough patches in your academic record, use your application to explain why. Be matter-of-fact, but don't make excuses. Discuss any hardships that may have affected your academic performance (e.g. maybe you took on a job to help support your family, you missed school due to illness/injury, or other personal circumstances affected your grades).

Walmart has millions of employees, and to maximize the impact of its scholarship funds, it wants to find the dependents of those employees who are most likely to get the most out of their education. A good predictor of this is the student's academic performance - show Walmart that you'll utilize its scholarship funds well to empower your own future.
